Edition / Original Japanese SFC release
Genealogy of the Holy War prologue | Rescuing villages and securing the Speed Ring and Silver Sword
The prologue has two stages: seize Yngvi Castle, then advance to Evans Castle. First assign units to deal with thieves raiding villages, and regroup just before taking Yngvi. The aim is to obtain the Speed Ring and Silver Sword and reach the next chapter without losing allies.

No complete verification of the procedure on original hardware. Cautious progression suggested by the editors, not a guaranteed sequence for specific turns. One hub and one early-game guide are available; not all chapters or data are covered.

At the start: separate Sigurd's task from village rescue
Make Sigurd the main force toward Yngvi, and assign Naoise and Alec to enemies approaching nearby villages. Rather than struggling to compensate for Arden's low movement, give him home-castle defense and nearby enemies to keep his role clear.
To protect villages, stop the thieves before visiting. Do not send everyone toward the same castle from the start: check the route to each village and the thieves' positions. Prioritize preventing destruction and collecting key rewards over maximizing every village's payout.
Give new allies nearby tasks
Azel and Lex appear to the north on turn 2. Assign them to stop enemies raiding nearby villages instead of trying to rescue the entire map with the starting force. Even though Azel can attack with magic, do not leave him where several enemies can surround him.
Quan, Ethlyn, and Finn join on turn 3. Send them to support Sigurd's side. Place Ethlyn a little behind the front line so wounded allies can return for healing. Advancing every mounted unit its full distance can leave nowhere to protect your healer.
The Speed Ring is in the village southwest of Yngvi Castle
The village southwest of Yngvi Castle awards the Speed Ring. After removing the thieves, decide who should carry it before visiting. Finn, who has Pursuit, is one candidate, but this allocation is not required. Consider weapon weight too, and choose an ally whose follow-up attacks you want to improve.
Because normal item trading is unavailable, if another ally collects it first, passing it on requires selling and buying through the pawnshop. Consider who receives money from the other villages too. Directing funds to allies responsible for healing and repairs helps prepare for the next chapter.
Do not seize immediately after defeating DiMaggio
Attack DiMaggio at Yngvi Castle with an ally who has sufficient HP. Mounted units should use their remaining movement to clear the attack position for those behind. If you cannot finish him, avoid piling on attacks while leaving a low-HP ally in front of the castle.
After defeating the commander, pause before seizing with Sigurd. Heal the wounded and check that the village rescuers are not isolated. Midir joins after the seizure, and the bridge and enemy movements change. Moving allies into position for the next fight beforehand makes the immediate response easier.
Talk to Arvis to receive the Silver Sword
Arvis appears from the north after you seize Yngvi Castle. His conversation with Sigurd is the requirement for receiving the Silver Sword, so finish it before moving on. Even if waiting for him to approach, do not send Sigurd so far away that contact is delayed.
Handle the new enemies near the bridge or in other places that limit how many can approach. Remember that an ally blocking the bridge can also block your own units behind. Judge enemy numbers and HP before switching from interception to advancing.
Final checks before Evans Castle
Finish by defeating Gerrard and seizing Evans Castle with Sigurd. Use the Silver Sword as an option against strong enemies instead of only storing it carefully. It can be repaired, so use it when needed while budgeting for next chapter's repair costs.
Before seizing, check village visits, who holds the Speed Ring, the Arvis conversation, and everyone's survival. Since the prologue has no arena, there is no need to prolong combat to finish training everyone. A safe save followed by equipment preparation at next chapter's castle facilities is sufficient.
Checks before moving on
- Azel, Lex, Quan, Ethlyn, and Finn have joined
- Midir joined after seizing Yngvi
- You obtained the Speed Ring from the southwestern village
- You received the Silver Sword through the Arvis–Sigurd conversation
- Check the remaining villages and allied survivors before seizing Evans Castle
Must Finn receive the Speed Ring?
Finn is a candidate who can use Pursuit well, but he is not mandatory. If you want to train someone else with Pursuit, decide who will use the ring before visiting the village.
Should I restart if a village is partly raided?
Its money reward decreases, but you can still visit before it is destroyed. This article aims to prevent destruction and missing key items, rather than keeping every village untouched.
