Energy Breaker(Super Famicom)
🧭 Tactical RPG fundamentals: Bal and energy
Tactical combat takes place on maps with elevation differences. Bal action points and fire/water/wind/earth energy allocation underpin offense and defense. Although combat is turn-based, you may choose who moves first and move back and forth freely. Understanding that rhythm is the quickest way to improve. Concrete operations and quantities explain how avoiding damage preserves your available actions.
Energy Breaker — what should I check first in Tactical maps and resource management?
Bal powers movement and techniques. A character can act repeatedly until it reaches zero. Movement has a flat cost regardless of distance, while energy adjustment and item use also consume Bal. Crucially, Bal recovery depends on Lp health: the closer Lp is to full, the more Bal returns each turn. Taking damage therefore hurts twice, reducing both health and next turn's actions. Avoiding hits is the highest priority.
| Phase | Objective | Checklist |
|---|---|---|
| Early game | Establish party roles |
|
| Midgame | Optimize movement for each chapter's victory conditions |
|
| Late game | Reduce mishaps on difficult maps |
|
1. Enemy reinforcements overwhelm you
Cause: Your starting formation is too aggressive
Solution: Pull your defensive line back and prioritize reinforcements
2. You can damage the boss, but ordinary enemies break your formation
Cause: Area attacks and healing are not cycling fast enough
Solution: Have support act earlier and add 1 character with area attacks
3. Late-game damage is insufficient
Cause: Development resources are spread too thinly
Solution: Concentrate resources on your main 4 characters and prioritize their equipment upgrades

- ▸ Movement costs the same Bal regardless of distance. You cannot cancel after moving, so choose destinations carefully
- ▸ Higher Lp means more Bal recovery. Heal damage early to regain momentum
- ▸ Lp and Bal fully recover after each battle, and incapacitation clears, so plan to use your resources within each fight
- ▸ Changing facing is free. Adjust it regularly to avoid exposing your back
Each of the four energies—fire, water, wind, and earth—has light and dark directions. Allocate them to meet a technique's requirements and make that attack or healing skill usable. For example, Shot requires raising fire and lowering wind, while Aqua Zone requires raising fire and lowering water. Each technique has its own Bal cost, range, and permitted elevation difference. To learn a new technique, raise energy limits through leveling, set the desired allocation, then use a technique in battle to spark it. Excessive allocation is said to make sparking harder, so increase it gradually rather than overreaching.
- ▸ Each level-up raises an energy limit by one point. Secret manuals show required allocations
- ▸ Meeting the requirements does not guarantee a spark; keep using techniques in the same battle
- ▸ Only Staa learns differently, absorbing techniques by defeating enemies with Attack instead of sparking them
- ▸ Techniques have range and elevation limits; some cannot reach high ground or past obstacles
Elevation varies across maps, while side and rear attacks deal more damage, making position and facing vital. Simply preventing enemies from reaching your sides and back greatly reduces losses. Runarudo's partner Garibaa cannot attack and can move only once per turn, but takes no damage from enemies, making him an excellent wall for corridors and stairs. Keep fragile Doroshii behind the front line, let frontliners absorb pressure, and use ranged attacks to wear enemies down.
- ▸ Side and rear attacks are advantageous. Circle enemies while protecting allies' backs
- ▸ Garibaa is an invulnerable blocker. Seal stairs and narrow passages to control enemy movement
- ▸ Ranged characters such as Doroshii and Runarudo can safely use Shot from behind
- ▸ Retorisa Paper reduces rear-attack damage to the level of a side attack
