Dressmaker Recutting and sewing controls: from replacing panels to finishing

Remove an incorrect fabric panel, recut it, and return to sewing. Also covers assistance and decoration controls by stage.

Source materials checked: 2026-10-16

Added controls in Build 443 and control references dated October 11. PC/Steam. No hands-on gameplay verification. Use this guide within its stated objective and scope.

Starting conditions and objective

Have an outfit in progress and a panel to work on. Finalize the customer's measurements and the pattern for this outfit first.

  1. Remove the target with the yellow seam ripper
  2. Return to the cutting table from the Pattern tab
  3. Finish sewing and decorations

Check fabric grain separately from print direction

Where and how you place the pattern on fabric affects the finished garment in Dressmaker. Matching the grain does not guarantee that directional flowers or gradients connect as intended. For orders prioritizing quality, check the grain indicator first, then the direction of the print.

Order for positioning pieces before cutting

  1. Place the large skirt or bodice panels and estimate the required length.
  2. Rotate the pattern to match the grain indicator.
  3. Align the top and bottom of matching parts and check that prints are not upside down between front and back.
  4. Try fitting smaller panels in the remaining spaces.
  5. Cut and check the appearance on the mannequin; continue cutting if it looks right.

Placing large pieces first is this article's workflow suggestion, not a layout guaranteeing minimum fabric use. If a pattern has alternative shapes, check the sketch variations too. Reports describe different shapes requiring different amounts of fabric even under the same name.

If you cut the wrong fabric

To replace a sewn panel, remove it with the yellow seam ripper at the bottom right of the mannequin screen, then return to the Pattern tab. Pick up that panel on the cutting table to reveal the recycling basket at the bottom right; place it there and cut it again. A player guide updated October 11 reports that used fabric is returned before the scraps are cut away, but not afterward. Check for panels needing replacement before discarding fabric.

Reference scope: player material dated October 11. This part should be checked for changes in Build 443. If current keys or displays differ, label these as older steps.

If you cannot find a cut piece

Build 443 added a button to collect all panels on the table together. You do not need to start with the older-guide method of cutting off a little fabric to retrieve pieces. Distinguish collecting pieces from discarding scraps.

There are also reports that attractive gradients and grain alignment can be difficult to combine. If stuck on an order requiring high quality, compare meeting the requirements with a solid or less directional fabric instead of redoing everything with the same material. This is a selection suggestion, not a claim that any particular fabric is always disadvantaged.

Separate sewing, rotating, and speed changes

First check the controls shown at the bottom of the screen. Published control references use Space to sew, A/D to rotate fabric, and W/S to change speed. Learning the difference between straight lines and corners at low speed helps identify mistakes more easily than adding several inputs at once.

  1. Make sure you can see the needle and seam line.
  2. Slow down and sew a short straight section to check the controls.
  3. At a corner, stop feeding the fabric and align it with the next line.
  4. On curves, use short advances and adjust the direction gradually.
  5. Check the result after sewing.

Using Sewing Assist

Several players report that Sewing Assist in settings helps rotate fabric. It does not automate measurements, fabric selection, cutting, and delivery. Sharp corners may still go in an unexpected direction, so watch speed and the seam line even with assistance enabled.

Redoing a failed section

Players report that R resets the current sewing piece. This does not restore the entire garment, so check the on-screen guidance before using it. For a piece already sewn and returned to the mannequin, guides describe removing it with the seam ripper and sewing again. Related seams may also need redoing, so inspect the problem pieces one at a time.

When thread is hard to see

Since Build 410, you can click the thread spool on the sewing screen to change color. Practicing with a color that stands out from the fabric is one option. There is no official explanation of a quality bonus for thread color.

If neat sewing does not improve the finished quality, check measurements and grain before repeatedly redoing the same seam. Conversely, if you exceed an order's upper limit, raising quality further may not solve the problem.

The October 14 update changed controls

When looking up trim or decoration placement, check that the explanation covers Build 443 or later. Different controls from an older video do not immediately indicate a bug. This update includes placement and camera changes.

Adjusting one length of trim

  • Click an endpoint to select it; click again to extend it.
  • You can drag to rotate the mannequin while placing trim.
  • The duplicate button creates another trim with matching height, size, and tilt.
  • Check Fast Trim Placement if you want fewer clicks.

This article recommends first setting the position and direction with one short trim, checking the finished appearance, then extending the approach to similar sections. Starting with a long full loop makes it harder to identify where alignment went wrong. Even for symmetry, do not assume a duplicate's position matches automatically; inspect front and back.

Camera and fine adjustments

On the mannequin screen, zoom with Ctrl + mouse wheel and pan by dragging with the right mouse button held. A move button was also added to the decoration gizmo. For small adjustments, stop adding other decorations temporarily and select only the target to avoid losing track of it.

I bought lace but the requirement did not increase

Lace fabric and lace trim are different. Check whether the requirement specifies fabric type or the length of edging. The same applies to floral fabric and flower accessories. Compare the counter before and after adding something to see whether it belongs to the required category.

Opening a garment made before the update

The official announcement also explains that existing trim may look slightly different. Inspect valued garments close up after updating, especially clipping in complex areas such as cuffs. Keeping images before and after adjustments makes changes easier to compare.
