🎮 Fishing minigames: timing basics

Timing display (basic fishing)

Follow the current fishing spot’s marked timing. A continuous moving-frame input has not been verified for every basic rod. Practice with the equipment and method currently shown.

Method-specific displays

Check the input shown for the equipped fishing method. A continuous bar-holding system has not been verified for every midgame rod.

Equipment and fishing method

Check the rod’s supported water types separately from its minigame. Simultaneous frame or bar inputs remain unverified; follow the current fishing spot’s display.

🌓 Fish times and unverified weather claims
☀️ Daytime (clear weather)
  • 🐟Blue Mackerel (Coastal, day)
  • 🐟Cod (Coastal, day)
  • 🐟Gulf Flounder (Shallow, day)
  • 🐟Sturgeon (Oceanic, day)

These are daytime examples from the fish guide, not clear-weather-only spawns. Practice the displayed timing while keeping a short return route.

🌫️ Daytime (fog or cloud)
  • 🐟Anglerfish (Abyssal, day and night)
  • 🐟Grey Eel (Shallow, day and night)
  • 🐟Cod (Coastal, day)

A claim that fog increases particular rare-fish appearances remains unverified. Fog reduces visibility; do not assume it is a fish-spawn condition, and sail carefully.

🌙 Nighttime (clear weather)
  • 🐟Arrow Squid (Coastal, night)
  • 🐟Black Grouper (Shallow, night)
  • 🐟Firefly Squid (Coastal, night)

Some base fish appear at night, but aberrations are not universally restricted to nighttime. Manage panic and equipment for night trips.

⛈️ Nighttime (storm)
  • 🐟Rare aberrations (weather restriction unverified)
  • 🐟Unusual deep-water creatures (weather restriction unverified)
  • 🐟Rare fish (weather restriction unverified)

Storm-only spawning conditions have not been verified. Weather increases navigation risk; do not treat a storm as a required fishing condition.

👁️ Aberration examples

Aberrations are distorted versions of regular fish. Check each base fish’s time and equipment rather than treating all aberrations as night-only or storm-only. They matter for encyclopedia collection and certain requests.

Name Region Time Difficulty Rod
Grotesque Mackerel The Marrows Day / disturbed water Easy Basic / Hydraulic Rod
All-Seeing Cod The Marrows Disturbed water Medium Hydraulic Rod
Brood Squid The Marrows Night Medium Hydraulic Rod
Aberrations (Abyssal) Stellar Basin / Devil's Spine Disturbed water Hard Fathomless Winch
Aberrations (Oceanic) Gale Cliffs Disturbed water Medium Versatile Rod
⚓ Suggested rod upgrade priorities
1

Hydraulic Rod

First priority

Covers Oceanic fish and increases fishing speed. A useful early-to-midgame rod.

2

Versatile Rod

Midgame priority

A general-purpose rod covering several water types. Helps support midgame income.

3

Fathomless Winch

Later priority

Covers Abyssal and Hadal fish, opening access to later deep-water catches.

4

Special rods from shrines

When resources allow

Regional Rock Slab shrines reward special rods such as Viscera Crane.

🗺️ Fishing routes

Opening: a loop around The Marrows

Start with nearby shallows, then fishing spots farther out before returning to the dock. Favor daytime trips and reinvest in cargo grid space and a Hydraulic Rod.

Midgame: Oceanic and deep-water aberrations

Gale Cliffs and Stellar Basin are useful midgame fishing regions. Green shimmering disturbed water offers a way to target valuable aberrations. At night, avoid overextending: wait at a dock until dawn or improve your lights and sail carefully.

Later: Devil’s Spine and deep-water spots

Prepare deep-water equipment, panic management and a nearby refuge. A stormy-night spawn requirement remains unverified; use each fish’s documented conditions.

❓ Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
▶ How should I approach the fishing minigames?

Read the timing display for the current fishing method and press at the marked opportunity. Do not assume every rod uses frame-following or continuous bar-holding; follow the display for your current equipment and method.

▶ How do I catch aberrations efficiently?

Look for green shimmering disturbed water and check the time and methods of the corresponding regular fish. Aberrations are not universally night-only or storm-only. Keep lights, panic and the return route in mind; this base-game guide does not assume DLC bait.

▶ What do I need to complete the encyclopedia?

Check regions, times, water types and equipment for missing entries. A storm-only requirement is unverified. The selected 57 regular/exotic and 67 aberration entries are not the complete encyclopedia; check DLC fish separately.

▶ Where should I fish for efficient income?

Early on, fish for Coastal species around The Marrows during the day and reinvest in your boat and equipment. Gale Cliffs and Stellar Basin offer Oceanic and deep-water fish later. Prepare lights, hull and Manifest before tackling dangerous Devil’s Spine or Twisted Strand trips. Aberrations sell for more than their regular counterparts.
