🪨 Death Howl Totem Guide
Twenty selected Totem entries in seven editorial groups, with five build plans, boss preparation, and acquisition routes. Official updates add further Totems, so this is not a complete current catalogue.
Totems are Death Howl’s equipment system. Ro equips them to gain effects with specific triggers and trade-offs. This article groups twenty selected entries into seven planning categories; those categories are editorial, and updates add more Totems.Sacred Groves support preparation and recovery. Review the available equipment slots and the actual Totem rules before choosing a set for the next route or battle.
🎯 Roles of the Seven Groups
🪨 Equipment Limits
- ▸ Available slots: Use the slots displayed in your current equipment menu; a fixed two-to-four progression is not established here.
- ▸ Progression check: Read the actual upgrade and equipment screens rather than assuming bosses, quests, or Howl spending automatically add a slot.
- ▸ When to prepare: Review the equipment before a battle and use a Grove for route planning and recovery. Do not rely on changing an equipped set during combat.
- ▸ Duplicate effects: Check the equipment menu’s restrictions; the same named effect is not assumed to stack.
- ▸ Planning groups: Attack, defense, and support are this article’s categories, not evidence for mandatory separate slot types.
🗺️ Main Totem Routes by Realm
| Realm | Selected Totems | Editorial difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| 1: Distorted Hollows | Tree Root, Bird Nest, Pearl, Reptilian Eggs | Easy |
| 2: Piercing Winds | Bear Skull, Thick Fur, Frozen Driftwood, Opal, Frostalite | Moderate |
| 3: Gloomy Waters | Algae Bubble, Red Rock, Frozen Fish Head, Adder Stone | Moderate |
| 4: Hostile Plains | Goathoof, Shell of Whispers, Amber Figurine, Crystalized Ox Heart | Demanding |
Some Totems are quest rewards. Uninvited Sorrows requires the relevant route without a Grove rest; In Search of Beauty uses a rock quest card to kill five distinct enemy types. Check the giver’s current instructions before starting.
Compare the selected Totems by seven planning groups, effects, acquisition routes, editorial tiers, build roles, and card pairings. They are selected entries rather than an exhaustive current list; uncertain acquisition claims are identified instead of presented as verified locations.

These five editorial plans compare different Totem interactions. Review each concept, equipment role, card choices, turn plan, and weaknesses against your selected mode and current card text.
Attack-Support Example
Suitable for: Distorted Hollows / Cantharsis preparationAn aggressive example that removes a small target, then spends a same-turn attack bonus on the remaining enemies. Add Echo-dependent damage only when the deck actually creates Echoes.
Double Strike / Triple Strike / Quick Strike / Furious Strike / A Stream of Thoughts
Try to finish a qualifying target early in the turn to activate Tree Root, then use the temporary bonus with the attacks you can afford. The bonus does not wait until a later turn. Compare early support options with the current damage plan; Frostalite contributes only when Echoes are created, rather than automatically adding damage to every aggressive deck.
A single target without available qualifying kills gives fewer opportunities for Tree Root. For a longer fight, compare other damage and resource plans using Trunkrot’s recorded launch-version 100 HP as a reference rather than a value fixed across modes.
Block-and-Attack Example
Suitable for: Piercing Winds / Tradontoz hands and falling iceA plan that combines Block and attacks whose actual effect or cost depends on protection. It can help absorb some damage, but does not remove the need to avoid falling-ice markers or handle Chill.
Defensive Swing (launch observation: 3 damage, cost reduced by current Block) / Block of Wood / Harden Soul / current Crushed from Above trade-off; inspect Deep Meditation separately
Frozen Driftwood adds 1 Block per turn and Bear Skull adds 3 Block on a qualifying kill in the recorded descriptions. Calculate what remains after damage and card costs before an attack. Thick Fur provides one fatal-strike protection per battle; it does not establish a guaranteed 20-damage sequence or immunity through the hand phase.
Setup and protection compete for mana with damage. Compare the time needed to prepare a useful attack with the encounter’s opening instead of declaring the plan automatically unsuitable for every Sorg deck.
Poison-Oriented Example
Suitable for: Cephagloom / Gloomy Waters / optional support laterAn example that spreads poison while preserving safe positions. Coordinating tentacle kills can open Cephagloom’s body, but poison is not the only way to handle the encounter.
Poisonous Grounds / Poisonous Winds / Poison Dart / Quiver of Poison Darts / Blood Sacrifice / A Touch of Gloom
Choose poison sources that can affect the needed targets and calculate their timing. Red Rock can return its current qualifying-kill mana. Algae Bubble has a health cost, and Fragile is not assumed to double all poison. After the official update, Blood Sacrifice supplies 1 mana and has Exhaust rather than guaranteed strong poison. Build the sequence around effects the current cards actually provide.
Ongoing damage takes time and may not fit a short opening. The later Algae Bubble health loss is 2 rather than 1, so calculate whether the plan can afford the trade-off.
Back-Positioning Example
Suitable for: Exorath / Hostile Plains preparationMove behind a target when its actual facing and vulnerability make that useful. Carapaces take double damage from behind, but that encounter-specific vulnerability is not a universal multiplier on every Backstab card against every enemy.
Backstab / Sharpshooter / Hunters Leap / Tainted Spear / A Leap of Death / Sprint
Plan movement to a Carapace’s back, the damage needed through current Block, and a safe ending tile. Reptilian Eggs can improve the opening choice and Push support can help suitable cards, but neither guarantees the right hand or a three-turn clear of all four shells.
Movement uses mana and may reduce the damage left for the turn. Sorg also reacts to actions, so inspect new danger markers instead of assuming its previous back position remains safe.
Recovery-Support Example
Suitable for: Repeated encounters / longer routes / fewer restsA sustained-travel example that uses actual recovery and protection to reduce losses between fights. It is useful only if the healing offsets the damage the encounters cause.
Deep Meditation / Harden Soul / Cleanse / Cure Poison / Warmth
Amber Figurine gives opening Block and ignores the next Ailment, while Pearl can produce Block from a random discard. Read Deep Meditation’s actual effect rather than counting it as a universal defensive card. Use the current Ox Heart recovery value and the quest’s own recovery card when planning Uninvited Sorrows; no setup guarantees ten consecutive wins or is compulsory for the quest.
A recovery-oriented setup may leave fewer resources for finishing damage. Compare the plan with the actual encounter’s openings rather than inventing a universal Sorg time limit.
Compare the following equipment roles with the actual encounter and your deck. Prepare before entering; the listed combinations are suggestions rather than required solutions.
| Bosses | Suggested Approach | Totem plan | Encounter notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cantharsis | Attack-Support Example | Tree Root + Brother's Bracelet + Thick Fur | Avoid Cantharsis’s frontal lane and clear dangerous summons. Use Tree Root’s qualifying-kill bonus within the turn; Thick Fur is optional one-hit survival protection. |
| Tradontoz | Block-and-Attack Example | Bear Skull + Frozen Driftwood + Opal | Remove Tradontoz’s hands while avoiding ice markers, then spend prepared damage in the one-turn body opening. Calculate current Block and card costs. |
| Cephagloom | Coordinated damage; poison is an option | Algae Bubble + Red Rock + Frozen Fish Head + Infected Tooth | Coordinate the tentacle clear and prepare the body opening. Do not require a particular Algae Bubble setup or assume Fragile always doubles poison. |
| Exorath | Back-Positioning Example | Goathoof + Reptilian Eggs + Thick Fur | Use the Carapace back vulnerability while avoiding the gap between shell backs. Reptilian Eggs offers an opening choice, not a guaranteed movement draw. |
| Moon Eel | Damage and Movement | Frostalite + Goathoof + Opal | Prepare to reach both sides and damage all six Roe during their turn. Opal’s random reduction can help the card it selects, but does not discount every high-cost attack. |
| Sorg | Attack-bonus build for the final fight | Frostalite + Tree Root + Thick Fur | Create Echoes to trigger Frostalite’s random-enemy damage, then use the remaining mana for attacks and safe positioning. Its damage is not an automatic hit on the boss every turn. |
| Trunkrot | Poison-Oriented Example | Frozen Fish Head + Red Rock + Infected Tooth | Use sustained damage and protection for the optional root encounter. Poison is one option; the launch observation gives 100 HP, while poison remains one option rather than a requirement. |
These realm routes compare useful pickups, quest objectives, and preparation priorities. Confirm accessible paths and the actual reward screen before taking a detour.
Distorted Hollows — first suggested realm
Acquire Tree Root for a kill-triggered attack bonus and compare Bird Nest’s extra draw against its extra card cost. Prepare enough movement and reliable damage for Cantharsis.
Piercing Winds — second suggested realm
Compare Frostalite’s Echo interaction, Thick Fur’s once-per-battle protection, and Opal’s random cost reduction. Choose effects the deck can use; none is mandatory for reaching Sorg.
Gloomy Waters — third suggested realm
Prepare coordinated damage against Cephagloom’s four tentacles. For In Search of Beauty, obtain the rock quest card, defeat five distinct enemy types with that card, and return to the giver. Equipping the Red Rock Totem is not the quest requirement.
Hostile Plains — fourth suggested realm
Prepare movement for Exorath’s rear weak points. Uninvited Sorrows provides a recovery option after completing the required route without resting at a Grove; finish the objective and return to the quest giver.
Q. Which Totems should I prioritize?
A. Choose a Totem for the interaction it supports. Tree Root rewards qualifying kills within the turn; Bird Nest adds a drawn card with a surcharge; Opal reduces a random card’s cost that turn; Thick Fur protects from one fatal strike per battle. Frostalite is useful for Echo plans, but does not damage the boss automatically without Echoes. The strongest option depends on the encounter, current effects, and the deck’s resources.
Q. Is Tree Root useful early?
A. Tree Root is an early option from a Forest Nest beyond an Elder encounter. A qualifying kill gives +1 attack damage for the rest of that turn, which can help a sequence of kills or a multi-hit attack. Plan when the first kill occurs and spend the bonus that turn. It is useful in suitable decks, without a guarantee to clear four or five enemies or a requirement to pair it with Brother’s Bracelet.
Q. How does Frostalite actually help?
A. Frostalite’s end-of-turn damage depends on the number of Echoes created that turn and targets a random enemy. It can support an Echo deck, but doing nothing does not produce guaranteed damage. When only the boss remains, the available target differs from an arena with summons. Plan Echo costs and possible targets using the actual Echo count and target pool rather than a guaranteed share of the boss’s health.
Q. When should I change Totems?
A. Review them before a new realm or difficult encounter. Match the effects to the intended cards: protection for a fragile opening, a kill bonus for multi-target turns, or Frostalite for an Echo plan. Check the current slot limit and equipment controls. Sharpshooter is a card option, not a Totem to equip in a Totem slot.
