Brotato Danger Levels: 0–5, Special Waves and Nightmare Unlocks
Use the next-wave timeline before spending materials. Higher Danger changes the enemies and scheduled threats, while Nightmare adds its own unlock requirement and environmental events. The April beta’s one-win entry rule is not the May release rule.

Danger modifiers and clear rewards
A higher level retains the lower levels’ enemy and event changes. The HP and damage percentages below are totals for that level, not percentages to add together: Danger 5 is +40%, not 12 + 26 + 40%. A clear grants the named character; merely reaching the final wave does not substitute for completing the run.
| Level | Main changes | Character reward |
|---|---|---|
| Danger 0 | No additional Danger modifiers. | One Armed |
| Danger 1 | Additional enemy types appear. | Bull |
| Danger 2 | Additional enemies; one elite or horde wave on wave 11 or 12. | Soldier |
| Danger 3 | Enemy HP and damage +12%; the one special wave remains. | Masochist |
| Danger 4 | Enemy HP and damage +26%; three elite/horde waves within waves 11–18. | Knight |
| Danger 5 | Enemy HP and damage +40%; three special waves; two simultaneous bosses on wave 20. | Demon |
| Nightmare | Enemy HP and damage +60%, speed +10%; Danger 5 features plus new enemies, environmental projectiles and fog. | Wounded |
Progress through the difficulty menu
Choose an unlocked Danger level you are ready to practise. Clearing Danger 0–4 unlocks the next Danger level. Nightmare has the separate ten-clear requirement below. Check the difficulty-selection explanation after a win; the character reward and next difficulty are different entries in the menu.
Keep the character familiar when learning a new threat. Changing both the character’s economy and the difficulty makes a loss harder to diagnose. This is an editorial learning sequence, not a claim that one character or weapon guarantees a clear.
Prepare differently for elite and horde waves
Check the timeline: wave 10 is not always a boss fight, and a special wave may be a horde rather than an elite. A horde tests how quickly you clear groups and keep an escape route open. An elite adds a dangerous target whose telegraphed attacks you still need room to dodge.
| Upcoming threat | Check the previous wave | Next purchase or action |
|---|---|---|
| Horde | Were groups blocking every exit? | Improve compatible area damage, piercing, bounce or knockback, and leave room to move. |
| Elite | Can you damage a tough target while dodging its telegraphed attacks? | Compare main-weapon damage with HP, recovery and movement. |
| Multiple special waves | Did the first encounter leave you weak? | Use the next shop for the next encounter; do not postpone every defensive purchase. |
| Wave 20 bosses | Are you taking contact damage just to keep shooting? | Dodge telegraphed attacks first. In a normal Crash Zone run, surviving until the timer ends can finish the wave. |
Before leaving the shop: five checks
Economy items can still help at higher Danger. When the next wave already exceeds your current offense or defenses, spend less on delayed returns. Base the next purchase on what went wrong in the previous wave.
- Read the next scheduled threat and whether it is a horde, elite or environmental event.
- Check your main weapon’s scaling and how many weapons are equipped after combining.
- Choose the problem to fix: enemies survive, routes close, or a few hits end the run.
- Buy the relevant improvement and lock a necessary offer you cannot yet afford.
- Reroll only with a budget left for the purchase you are seeking. Read the displayed cost each time.
Nightmare: earn ten qualifying Danger 5 wins
The released All Pain No Gain announcement requires ten Danger 5 wins using distinct characters, or different maps when Abyssal Terrors is owned. Repeating the same character on the same map ten times is not the stated condition. Use the difficulty menu’s progress explanation to check which wins your save has recorded.
The April 7, 2026 beta announcement described entry after one Danger 5 win. The May 12 release changed the published requirement. If an older guide says one clear, compare its date and branch before treating your locked Nightmare entry as a bug.
Prepare for projectiles and fog
Environmental projectiles cross the arena; the arrow-shaped bullets indicate their direction. The accessibility menu can disable them or make them occur every wave, and the run title records a changed projectile setting. Compare runs with the same settings if you are comparing results.
Fog reduces visibility outside the light around you. Structures, pets and fire-related effects can provide light. The checked release notes schedule fog within waves 5–7, 10–12 and 16–18. Plan navigation and survival before the first elite arrives.
A Nightmare win unlocks Wounded. A later win with Wounded on any difficulty unlocks Rail Gun. These are two separate clears; you do not need to win Nightmare with Wounded to obtain the weapon.
Settings and character exceptions
The modifier table assumes accessibility sliders at 100%. HP and damage sliders multiply the Danger modifiers in the checked version. For example, Danger 5 with the enemy-damage slider at 25% gives 1.40 × 0.25 = 0.35 of baseline damage. Record settings instead of calling it an ordinary 100% clear.
Jack does not receive normal horde scheduling on high Danger. Character-specific rules can change the experience, so use your actual timeline. Primal Dread was announced for November 2, 2026; it is unreleased at this October 17 check and supplies no required unlock in this guide.
Questions and answers
Do I have to kill an elite to survive its wave?
A normal Crash Zone wave can be survived until its timer ends. Killing an elite offers a reward, but staying in a lethal attack to chase that reward can end the run.
Does one Danger 5 win unlock Nightmare?
That was the April beta rule. The May release requires ten Danger 5 clears across different characters or qualifying maps. Check the current difficulty menu.
Do Danger 3, 4 and 5 bonuses add together?
No. The listed HP and damage bonuses are each level’s total. Danger 5 uses +40% before accessibility multipliers.
