Return of the Obra Dinn beginner guide: watch, book, and correcting entries
PC controls, matching faces to sketches, revising hypotheses, and checking an unresponsive watch or entry. No actual crew answers are displayed.
Edition: PC Steam full game (AppID 653530), primarily Japanese display with PC keyboard/mouse controls. Console buttons and development demos are excluded.
Verification scope: References the official history's default version 1.2.122, history updated September 20, 2022. The distributed build and Japanese in-game inputs on October 4, 2026 were not verified.

PC controls: approach the target before interacting
Keys have different functions in exploration and the book. In particular, distinguish A/D movement from turning book pages.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Action | PC input | Required state | If it does not respond |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walk and look | W/A/S/D; mouse to look | Exploration screen with the book closed | Close the book or menu and approach the target |
| Interact with ladders, doors, or the watch | Left click or Space | A visible reaction such as a reaching hand or appearing watch | Check distance and whether you are looking at the correct target |
| Zoom a face and see its matching sketch | Hold E or right click | Aim at a face within a memory | Look at the face rather than the torso |
| Open the focused person's record | Tab while focusing on the face | The face-to-sketch correspondence is visible | If the fate page is undiscovered, check the sketch instead |
| Open or close the book | Tab | Normal exploration, memory, or book | Read any remaining control instructions first |
| Turn pages or return to contents | A/D、Q | Book open | Check that you are not pressing movement keys in exploration |
| Check settings and controls | Esc | Normal screen | Also check whether a connected controller switches the input mode |

The developer documents alternatives such as arrow movement and Space. If keyboard input fails, disconnecting a controller with slight stick input may help.
Enter a memory, record it, and return to the present
On a first visit, hear the audio and explore the frozen scene. Automatic book recording after a time does not end your opportunity to observe.
- Approach a present-day body where the watch appears and interact to enter its memory.
- After the audio, inspect nearby faces, views through windows, and visible upper and lower levels as well as the victim.
- After the first automatic record, close the book to return to the scene.
- When the exit door appears, pass through to the present. If the watch shakes, search nearby bodies.
- After examining another highlighted body, follow the white mist released in the present and use the watch where it stops.
Discovery order is not chronological. The book's chapters and part numbers organize events chronologically.
Distinguish available clues from confirmed identities
An unblurred face and a correctly entered name are different things.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Display or field | Meaning | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Blurred face | An indication that sufficient clues have not yet been obtained | Discover more scenes; do not finalize a candidate |
| Unblurred face | An indication that observed material includes identification clues | Compare speech, location, and duties; another identity may need solving first |
| Triangles beside a face | An estimated deduction difficulty, not your accuracy rating | Start building connections with people showing fewer marks |
| Handwritten name or fate | Still provisional | Select and change the field if it conflicts with evidence |
| Typeset record after the confirmation sequence | Validated information | Use it to narrow other candidates |
| Appearance list or bookmarks | An index of scenes containing that face | Compare earlier and later moments; the index itself does not teleport you |

Assigning an already used manifest name to another face may return the first face to unknown. Check existing assignments before changing them.
Check fields in this order when confirmation fails
Normally, three correct unconfirmed fates validate together. One confident entry without a response is not necessarily wrong. Late-game exceptions are covered in the exploration article.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Symptom | Book field to check | Action | Evidence to investigate |
|---|---|---|---|
| The name is certain but not confirmed | Fate and additional fields | Fill missing fields; a name alone is not a completed fate | That person's final scene |
| The apparent cause of death is rejected | Weapon and direct killer | Distinguish who used what and check the killer's name | Trajectory, blade, falling object, and preceding scene |
| It still fails after correcting the killer's name | Killer fields on other people's pages | Open every page using that name and correct each field separately | Other records involving the same person |
| Three entries produced no confirmation | Every field in all three entries | Keep strong evidence and review one uncertain field at a time | Separate identity evidence from fate evidence |
| Witnessed scene and cause of death conflict | Time of injury versus time of death | Return to earlier scenes and trace the fatal injury | Continuity of wounds, weapons, and companions |

Changing everything at once hides which hypothesis failed. Example personal note: “Face A: two possible roles / cause observed / killer unverified.” Face A is fictional and does not reveal an actual crew answer.
Write observations separately from deductions
A/B here are fictional examples, not names or fates of actual people aboard.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Evidence type | Compare | Example note | Avoid assuming |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spoken address | Subtitles, speaker field, and facing direction | Observation: A calls a name. Hypothesis: B opposite has that name | Do not confuse the speaker with the person addressed |
| Workplace and duties | Room name, tools, and work being done | Observation: the same person works at the assigned desk | Standing in a room once does not establish a role |
| Clothing and belongings | Whether the same feature persists across scenes | Observation: a similarly patterned tool appears elsewhere | Consider transferred possessions and similar clothing |
| Elimination | Manifest role candidates and confirmed information | Hypothesis: two of three candidates are confirmed as other faces | If the starting assumptions are unconfirmed, the remaining candidate is not certain |

Do not infer nationality from accent or appearance alone. Combine manifest candidates with dialogue, duties, and correspondences across scenes.
If the watch will not respond or you lose the exit
Even if something looks like a corpse, inability to enter a memory is not necessarily a bug. Check the current time frame and discovery state.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Symptom | Check | Action to try | Return landmark |
|---|---|---|---|
| No watch appears at a body inside a memory | Whether that death scene was already visited | Return to the present and inspect the blurred body placed by the mist | Book corpse location or map |
| I forgot where the white mist went | Newly appeared body or map question mark | Distinguish the final memory location from the present-day corpse location | Chapter corpse-location field |
| Selecting a page does not jump to the scene | Whether you are viewing an index or a memory | Locate the body and walk to it on the present-day ship | Deck names, rooms, and stairs |
| I cannot find the exit door | Whether first recording is complete or the watch is shaking | Look around after recording. If another body must be discovered, examine it first | The freestanding door that appears in the scene |
| Only mouse or keyboard input fails | Connected controller and sticks | Disconnect the controller if needed and test input again | Settings control display |

Official support advises returning to a present-day entrance rather than repeatedly examining an unvisited body inside a memory. Deleting or modifying saves is not the ordinary solution.
Stopping and resuming: protect progress before troubleshooting
Select the same profile when resuming and check discovered scenes and confirmed entries. Finding your previous location in a guide does not require starting a new game.
- Before stopping, note the manifest number, chapter/part to revisit, and unresolved fields.
- Resume the same profile. If progress differs, check for another selected profile.
- If a crash or synchronization really lost progress, copy the save and Backup folders elsewhere before further overwriting.
- Keep restoration separate from ordinary deduction corrections. Follow official Savefile Backups instructions and identify your P1/P2/P3 first.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| PC environment | Official save location | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | C:\Users\[username]\AppData\LocalLow\3909\ObraDinn\ | Protect both main saves and Backup; do not mix profiles |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/3909/ObraDinn/ or ~/Library/Application Support/co.3909.ObraDinn/ | Official support lists two possibilities. Check which exists; do not delete unrelated folders |

Official backup guidance covers 1.1.110 onward. Recent, EditFate, and CorrectFates are created at different times; their names do not guarantee restoration to an exact moment.
Frequently asked questions
A face is clear, but I still cannot identify it.
This indicates clues are available, not an automatic name answer. Another identity may be required first; compare appearances and role candidates.
Does clicking the book map take me to that memory?
It normally records corpse locations. Walk there on the present-day ship and use the watch to revisit.
Must I restart after a wrong entry?
Unconfirmed fields can be changed. If a killer's name changes, also check other people's fate fields using that name.
My progress is different after resuming.
First check the selected profile. For a crash or sync issue, protect existing saves and consult official backup instructions. Ordinary deduction does not require editing files.
