Return of the Obra Dinn character guide: progressive hints and fate entries
Check evidence separately from fate entries by manifest number. Every character answer starts closed, so you can read only the evidence you need.
Edition: PC Steam full game (AppID 653530), primarily Japanese display with PC keyboard/mouse controls. Console buttons and development demos are excluded.
Verification scope: References the official history's default version 1.2.122, history updated September 20, 2022. The distributed build and Japanese in-game inputs on October 4, 2026 were not verified.
Sources checked: 2026-10-04

Searching does not open answer tables. Choose the answer you want to reveal.
Open only the manifest number you need
Numbers match the in-game manifest. “Records to revisit” gives evidence locations and reasoning; “Fate entry” contains identity, role, and example inputs. Evidence can name other people or scenes, so both remain closed.
- Choose the manifest number you want to investigate.
- To keep deducing, open only Records to revisit.
- If you cannot enter the scene, check its corpse entrance in the exploration article.
- For the answer, open Fate entry under the same number.
All 60 people are covered, but not every accepted alternative input is listed. Every Japanese input has not been retested in-game on the current PC build. Source-supported primary entries, alternatives, and withheld points are distinguished.

Example inputs and accepted alternatives
The source's Japanese fields align meanings across references rather than claiming every option's wording and hierarchy was tested. English equivalents identify those meanings here; current on-screen options still take precedence.
- Select the person in the name field.
- Choose the fate category, then weapon or cause where required.
- Fill a killer or destination only if that field appears.
- If you later correct a killer's name, also check victim entries using that name.
Additional fields depend on the selected fate. Do not search for fields that are not displayed. Even where alternatives are documented, check names and required fields rather than attributing every rejection to an alternative input.

Check identity evidence separately from evidence of what happened. A correct name can still have the wrong killer, so avoid treating one observation as proof of both.

Frequently asked questions
Is a correct name enough?
Also fill the fate, required weapon or subtype, and any killer or destination. Identity and fate evidence may be in different scenes.
Do I need a death scene for everyone in the manifest?
Some people have no recorded moment of death. Closed character evidence also identifies where to compare disappearances and book statements.
Can one person have multiple accepted causes?
Some accept more than one wording. The table separates primary entries from documented alternatives; it is not an exhaustive in-game test table.
I entered an answer, but nothing happened.
The normal system does not confirm each person individually. Check names, causes, and additional fields one entry at a time, and consult the closed final exploration section if near the end.
