PLANET LAIKA Guides
A PlayStation psychodrama RPG released by Enix in 1999. Created by staff associated with Quintet and by Zeque, this difficult, symbolic work takes place on Mars. Its defining premise is that protagonist Laika has multiple personalities within their mind. The personality at the surface changes with story and puzzle situations, altering how the world appears, available actions, and responses during dialogue and combat. Filled with religious and philosophical motifs and allegory, its largely linear narrative emphasizes experiencing the story and interpreting symbols over combat and leveling. This experimental cult work is not for everyone, but speaks to players interested in psychological portrayal and an unusual setting.
English translation of the existing Japanese guide. Japanese-release names and mechanics are retained; this is not a new gameplay verification or a claim of complete coverage.
Early game
Learn the controls and personality system, and understand Mars and Laika's situation
- ・Try the basic movement, examination, conversation, and combat controls
- ・Keep in mind that impressions and reactions change when personalities switch
- ・Follow the objectives presented in the first chapter so your next step is clear
Midgame
Connect personality changes to story and puzzles, maintaining steady progress between chapters
- ・Reconsider your approach as each chapter changes the personality or psychological state at the surface
- ・When a puzzle blocks you, compare the current personality's viewpoint with another's to find missing clues
- ・Keep healing and equipment updated to avoid excessive combat depletion
Late game
Face the convergence of personalities and story, interpreting symbols through the climax
- ・Review symbols and foreshadowing presented in earlier chapters
- ・Use each personality's traits when handling bosses and difficult sections
- ・Even when presentation becomes abstract, follow progression triggers through dialogue, scenery, and personality state
Problem: You no longer know where to go or what to do next
Cause: Progression hints are embedded abstractly in dialogue and scenery, and skipping them loses clues
Solution: Review recent events and dialogue, then systematically check people you have not spoken to, unexamined targets, and symbolic objects you have not interacted with
Problem: A puzzle or conversation goes nowhere and you keep circling the same place
Cause: Some elements are invisible or unresponsive from the current personality's viewpoint, creating a mismatch with its state
Solution: Identify the current personality; if it has changed, revisit the same place or person from the different viewpoint
Problem: Combat or difficult sections drain you too heavily to continue
Cause: Healing or equipment upgrades have been postponed, or you are relying on brute force rather than personality traits
Solution: Check healing options and equipment before proceeding, then adjust your tactics to the situation and make use of personality traits
📋 Chapter progression alongside changing personalities
This experimental RPG is story-driven: understanding the narrative and meeting progression triggers matter more than combat. Each chapter indicates places to visit and people to meet, so follow dialogue and events carefully while establishing your next objective.

Protagonist Laika has different personalities within their mind. The personality at the surface changes according to story and puzzle scenes, and the world is portrayed through that personality. Different perceptions, actions, and reactions are the defining feature: even in the same situation, a different personality changes available choices and information.

Although progression is story-driven, combat and difficult sections still exist. Securing healing and updating equipment provide a stable foundation. Review what you carry before advancing and avoid forcing successive battles to prevent stalled progress.
