GARAGE: Bad Dream Adventure Guides

A point-and-click adventure in which the protagonist wakes in a distorted mental world inside the psychiatric treatment device Garage and tries to escape it. Its defining features are a decaying world teeming with eerie mechanical creatures and plants, and difficult puzzles with almost no hints, including many unfair deaths and dead ends. Released for PC by Toshiba EMI in 1999, it was long considered a lost rarity, but remasters appeared on Steam in 2022 and Nintendo Switch on June 6, 2024. Grouped with Kowloon's Gate and BAROQUE as the 3 great distorted-world games, it demands patience for systematic experimentation and immersion in its setting.

📋 Overview of the walkthrough steps

Early game

Learn the controls and world layout, and establish your initial range of movement

  • ・Sweep the cursor over the entire screen to identify responsive examination, movement, and conversation points
  • ・Obtain the first available tools and try them on nearby objects to learn how they behave
  • ・Explore while noting how accessible areas connect, learning their layout for yourself

Midgame

Expand your exploration and work out tool-to-mechanism relationships one at a time

  • ・On entering a new area, click throughout it first to establish every usable exit
  • ・When stuck, try each tool on every object in the current location in sequence
  • ・Compare information from conversations and encounters with inhabitants or creatures as clues for action

Late game

Bring your collected tools and knowledge together to establish an escape route

  • ・Check your inventory for tools that remain unused
  • ・Return to earlier dead ends with newly acquired tools and try again
  • ・Save before dangerous mechanisms and proceed carefully through the final escape steps
⚠️ Common sticking points and solutions

Problem: Nothing advances wherever you go, and progress stops completely

Cause: There are still unclicked spots or tool uses you have not tried

Solution: Click across the current screen again from edge to edge, then systematically retry each possession on every object

Problem: You suddenly die or abruptly reach a dead end

Cause: The game contains many unfair deaths and unwinnable situations, making outcomes difficult to predict

Solution: Always save before operating suspicious mechanisms or unfamiliar objects, and proceed expecting to retry from just before a failure

Problem: You have so many tools that you lose track of their uses

Cause: Hints are sparse, and the relationships between tools and mechanisms are not intuitive

Solution: Note where you obtained each tool and what you have not tried it on, prioritizing unused items

💡 Key guide points

📋 Exploring areas and working toward escape

The game does not provide careful directions. Applying the same routine methodically in every area is therefore the foundation of progress. First establish where you can move and what you can examine, then try your tools; keep that order consistent.

Position the cursor on screen and select actions such as examining, moving, or using a tool. Responsive spots are often difficult to identify visually, so regularly moving the cursor around to investigate is important.

🔑 The basics of finding and using tools

Tools are often picked up while exploring or obtained through mechanisms and interactions with inhabitants. Carefully clicking through each screen is essential to avoid missing them. A place that does not respond initially may open later.

FAQ

GARAGE: Bad Dream Adventure Guide FAQ

Q1 I cannot make any progress. What should I do? ▼
A

The cause is usually either an unexplored location or a tool use you have not tried. Click across the current screen again from edge to edge, then retry each tool on every seemingly related object. If that does not help, returning to an earlier dead end with new tools may open the way.

Q2 I keep dying. Is the game too difficult? ▼
A

The game is known for many unfair deaths and blocked situations, so failures on a first playthrough are to be expected. The safest approach is to save regularly before suspicious mechanisms or unfamiliar objects and keep multiple saves so you can retry from just before a failure.

Q3 Should I play the original, Steam, or Switch edition? ▼
A

For convenience, the 2022 Steam remaster and 2024 Switch remaster are accessible choices. The remaster is said to restore some previously altered presentation to its original intention, also making it suitable for those who want to experience the distinctive world as intact as possible.
