Terraria bosses — spawn conditions and suggested order
Pre-Hardmode bosses organized as a progression guideline. Source article updated: August 12, 2026
Pre-Hardmode progression guideline
King Slime → Eye of Cthulhu → Eater of Worlds / Brain of Cthulhu → Skeletron → Queen Bee → Deerclops → Wall of Flesh is one guideline. King Slime, Queen Bee and Deerclops are optional and can be skipped. Wall of Flesh comes last in this pre-Hardmode plan: defeating it permanently starts Hardmode.
Spawn condition: Use a Slime Crown, or encounter a random spawn
An optional introductory boss useful for early equipment progression.
Spawn condition: Can spawn at night with at least 200 maximum HP, more than 10 defense and 3 housed NPCs; also summonable at night with a Suspicious Looking Eye
A practical first major hurdle. Prepare broad, flat running platforms before challenging it.
Spawn condition: Branches by world evil: Eater in Corruption, Brain in Crimson
The initial evil is determined during world creation. Boss materials support the next equipment tier; follow your world's corresponding route.
Spawn condition: Speak to the Old Man at the Dungeon entrance at night and choose “Curse”
Defeating it opens safe Dungeon exploration and access to strong equipment, making it a major milestone.
Spawn condition: Break a Larva in a Jungle hive, or use an Abeemination in the Jungle
An optional detour offering useful equipment progression.
Spawn condition: Use a Deer Thing in the Snow biome, or meet its natural blizzard-spawn conditions
An optional boss from the Don't Starve collaboration.
Spawn condition: Drop a Guide Voodoo Doll into Underworld lava while the Guide is alive
The final pre-Hardmode boss. Defeating it permanently starts Hardmode: prepare before challenging it.
- ▸ Build platforms before fighting: long, flat routes let you keep attacking while dodging. Terrain can substantially change the encounter alongside equipment.
- ▸ Understand healing cooldowns: healing items have a reuse delay. Mashing cannot bypass it, so reduce incoming hits.
- ▸ Choose summon timing: prepare first, then summon. Night-only bosses still require the appropriate nighttime window.
- ▸ Use boss materials for the next equipment tier: progression often follows boss → materials → next boss. If stuck, revisit the previous tier and upgrade equipment.
Q. Must bosses be defeated in exactly this order?
No. King Slime, Queen Bee and Deerclops are optional. The Wall of Flesh belongs last in this pre-Hardmode plan, because defeating it starts Hardmode.
Q. Which is the first boss?
The Eye of Cthulhu is a practical first hurdle. It can appear randomly at night with at least 200 maximum HP, more than 10 defense and 3 housed NPCs. A Suspicious Looking Eye allows a prepared nighttime summon.
Q. Will I encounter Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu?
It depends on your world's evil, chosen or randomized during creation: Eater of Worlds in Corruption; Brain of Cthulhu in Crimson. Check the world before following its progression guide.
Q. What happens after defeating Wall of Flesh?
The world permanently enters Hardmode. Enemies and progression change and subsequent steps introduce new ores. It cannot be undone: prepare base defenses, healing and movement first.
