Stardew Valley first year — seed costs, harvest dates and seasonal planning

Last updated: October 3, 2026

Before expanding, schedule harvest dates and daily watering. Cycle funds through short spring crops and reserve seasonal items for Community Center bundles to clarify your next steps.

An example first-year plan for ordinary farms in the 1.6 series. The exact running build is unconfirmed. Harvest dates assume daily watering, no growth boosts and outdoor crops within their season. This is not a complete crop-profit ranking or every Community Center bundle.

Calculate harvests: planting is growth day 0

Planting day is growth day 0

Harvest date = planting date + growth days. A 4-day Parsnip planted and watered on Spring 1 is ready on Spring 5. Do not count Spring 1 itself as the first elapsed growth day.

Calculate the last planting date backward

For a first harvest by day 28, use 28 − growth days. Cauliflower needs 12, so Spring 16 is the guideline. Starting on Spring 17 runs beyond the season. Missing 1 watering day delays the schedule accordingly.

Separate first harvest from regrowth

Buy Strawberries at the Spring 13 festival, plant and water that day: first harvest 13 + 8 = 21; regrowth 21 + 4 = 25. The next would be day 29, outside an ordinary spring. Last-planting dates target only the first harvest; multiple harvests require earlier planting.

8 first-year crops: seed costs, growth and first-harvest deadlines

Prices are ordinary costs per packet at the listed source, not crop sale prices. Deadlines assume daily watering, no fertilizer or growth boosts and a first harvest by day 28. This is not every crop, greenhouse planting or cross-season crop coverage.

Parsnip:Useful for inexpensive replanting practice. Plan Spring 1→5, then replant after harvest for 5→9.

Cauliflower:Ties up seed funds for longer. Reserve 1 for the Spring Crops Bundle too.

Strawberry:Use the first-year festival purchase opportunity. Plant and water after returning home. It is not part of Pierre's ordinary shop stock.

Melon:A long-growth summer crop. Separate the Summer Crops Bundle portion before shipping.

Blueberry:A regrowing crop with a long initial wait. Plant early in summer; keep the plant and water after its first harvest.

Pumpkin:Store one for the Fall Crops Bundle. After Fall 15, check that a normal first harvest no longer fits within the season.

Cranberries:Seeds cost more, so budget quantity and remaining funds first. Planting on Fall 1 normally gives first harvest on 8, then 13, 18, 23 and 28.

Powdermelon (added in 1.6):An exception that grows outdoors in winter. If you dig up seeds with the Hoe, budget 7 days of watering. They are not ordinary Pierre stock.

Compare ways to spend 80g

At 20g per Parsnip seed, 80g buys 4 packets; at 80g per Cauliflower seed, it buys 1. First harvest takes 4 versus 12 days, and watering covers 4 tiles versus 1. Compare daily work and the date your investment returns, as well as seed cost.

4-season plan: fields, funds and stored items

Spring: small fields and Community Center access

  1. Check initial seeds and tools; till only what you can water every morning. The 1.6 Meadowlands Farm starts with a coop and 2 chickens: adapt a seed-first plan and include animal care.
  2. After the first harvest, check remaining days before buying more seeds. For Parsnips, schedule planting day + 4; store required crops before shipping extras.
  3. Progress the Community Center event from Spring 5 onward. Once bundles are readable, inspect spring crop and forage entries; do not sell every required item.
  4. If attending the Spring 13 Egg Festival, decide Strawberry packet quantity first. Prepare fields for planting on return, aiming for Spring 21 and 25 harvests. Reserve summer seed funds near season's end.

Summer: separate regrowing crops from bundle crops

  1. Before choosing seeds on Summer 1, count remaining funds and field tiles. Do not plant only regrowing Blueberries; grow required Melons separately too.
  2. Blueberries need 13 days to their first harvest. They do not immediately return funds: retain money for subsequent purchases.
  3. On harvest day, separate items for bundles or requests from those to ship. Keep regrowing plants and continue watering them.
  4. After Summer 16, check whether a newly bought Melon's first harvest fits by Summer 28. Avoid filling fields just to use space; prepare for Fall 1 seeds.

Fall: check winter funds and unfinished deliveries

  1. Budget Pumpkins and Cranberries separately. Cranberry seeds cost 240g: remaining funds ÷ 240 gives a packet ceiling, but reserve some money yourself.
  2. Pumpkins take 13 days; Cranberries take 7 for the first harvest. For late-fall purchases, check whether the first harvest fits before counting regrowth.
  3. Open fall Community Center entries and store required crops or forage in separate chests. Standard and Remixed Bundles differ: follow your screen over this example.
  4. At fall's end, review funds and materials for winter purchases, facilities and tools. Include next spring's needs and decide what to buy before selecting expensive items.

Winter: combine foraging, mines, tools and 1.6 winter crops

  1. Even without the greenhouse, plan foraging, fishing and mining. Check outdoor seeds are winter-compatible; do not plant leftover summer or fall seeds in the wrong season.
  2. In 1.6, hoe winter Seed Spots and similar locations for Powdermelon Seeds. Use Winter 21 as the guideline for the first harvest, with daily watering after sowing.
  3. Before handing over a tool, finish that day's relevant work and watering. Check displayed cost and collection timing at the Blacksmith and schedule fishing or foraging instead.
  4. Inspect Winter Foraging and unfinished Community Center entries. Completion in year 1 is not mandatory here: record missing seasonal items for next year.

Open the Community Center and read bundles

  1. From Spring 5, enter Pelican Town from the Bus Stop between 8:00 and 13:00 on a non-rainy day to trigger the first event. Re-enter during the eligible window rather than waiting inside town.
  2. After the event, enter the Community Center and inspect the unreadable scroll in the bottom-left room.
  3. Read the Wizard's letter the next morning and visit his tower in the western forest to progress the event.
  4. Check the now-readable bundles. Standard and Remixed requirements differ; keep and deliver the actual spring items shown.

When plans slip

Missed watering days

Ordinary crops do not grow on unwatered days. Add missed days to the harvest plan and check remaining season time instead of relying on planting date alone.

Confusing seed prices with crop sale prices

The table gives purchase cost per seed packet. Use it for initial investment, not crop or processed-product selling prices.

Assuming nothing can grow in winter

1.6 Powdermelons grow outdoors in winter. Greenhouses and Winter Seeds also have their own rules: check each seed's seasons.

Applying standard bundle examples to different settings

Remixed requirements differ. Open your Community Center entry and verify required items before selling crops.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Do 4-day seeds planted on Spring 1 harvest on Spring 4?

With daily watering and no growth boost, it is Spring 5. Planting day is day 0: schedule 1 + 4 = 5.

Q. When should I plant for a day-28 harvest?

Normally use 28 − growth days: day 24 for 4-day Parsnips and day 16 for 12-day Cauliflower. Missed watering or growth boosts change this calculation.

Q. Can I buy Strawberries every day in spring?

The accessible first-year opportunity is the Spring 13 Egg Festival. Plan it separately from Pierre's ordinary shop purchases.

Q. Can I stop watering in winter?

Continue required watering if growing crops. 1.6 Powdermelons take 7 days outdoors in winter. Greenhouse crops also require a plan separate from a winter without fields.

Q. Did I fail if the Community Center is unfinished in year 1?

This plan does not require year-1 completion. Record missing seasonal items and target the next acquisition season.

Q. Should I begin with the same fields on Meadowlands Farm?

1.6 Meadowlands Farm starts with a coop and 2 chickens. Check starting supplies and facilities, and include chicken care alongside watering.
