Detailed section 2 — major spoilers
Mouthwashing is a linear narrative horror game without branching endings, with one story ending. Choices do not lead to RPG-style alternate endings, collectible epilogues or a cake-dependent outcome. The fixed conclusion can be read in relation to Jimmy’s inability to escape responsibility.
📌 One outcome rather than branching routes
There is no choice-based route that prevents Anya’s death or restores Curly. Curly is alive at the final scene, but rescue is unresolved. The experience centers on reconstructing and witnessing events through a disrupted timeline.
A repeat playthrough can help compare earlier clues and collect five employee cards and work toward 18 achievements. The Good Ending is an optional achievement associated with the graveyard sequence, not another story ending.
Detailed section 3 — major spoilers
Mouthwashing’s single ending is discussed through its requirements, presentation and possible symbolic readings.
Detailed section 4 — major spoilers
🗝️ Requirement
Reach the end of the story. The ending is fixed, without an alternate route.
Continue to the end of the story. The outcome is fixed; no branching route or earlier choice replaces it with another ending.
🎬 Scene details
Jimmy arranges the bodies at a birthday table, then places Curly in the only working cryopod and claims to have fixed things. He dies by suicide off-screen; the final viewpoint is Curly’s as the pod activates and Jimmy’s suicide is heard. A nominal twenty-year sleep leaves discovery uncertain, with no rescue shown. Cards and other choices do not replace this single outcome.
💭 Symbolic readings
The meaning of “Mouthwashing”: One reading connects rinsing the mouth with trying to erase words, memories or wrongdoing. Jimmy’s denial parallels the cargo’s literal mouthwash, while the birthday and cake imagery can suggest the failure of that attempted cleansing. This is interpretation rather than an official explanation.
The final cryopod and Jimmy’s suicide: Jimmy arranges the bodies at a birthday table, places Curly in the only working cryopod, claims to have fixed things and dies by suicide off-screen. The final perspective is Curly’s. The nominal twenty-year sleep leaves rescue uncertain; no later recovery is shown.
The player as witness: Jimmy’s viewpoint is unreliable. The final shift to Curly can place the player in the position of a witness unable to respond. The story does not establish Jimmy’s redemption.
A first playthrough without detailed guides lets you assemble your own reading. Afterward, revisit the clues and symbolic imagery. A further run can target the five employee cards and any missing entries from the 18-achievement list; completion time and replay-menu behavior have not been tested here.

A character-by-character summary of the ending. Jimmy’s deliberate crash and the crew’s final fates are story events; detailed motives and symbolic meanings remain open to interpretation.
🎭 Jimmy: violence and denial
Jimmy deliberately causes the crash by disabling the autopilot and setting the collision in motion. His reaction to the company closure and Anya’s pregnancy gives context for a reading about avoiding accountability. Polle, cake and birthday hallucinations can be discussed as denial; they do not excuse his actions.
▸ Final fate: after arranging the bodies at a birthday table and placing Curly in the last cryopod, Jimmy dies by suicide off-screen. Redemption is not confirmed.
🤐 Curly: an injured victim and failed protector
Curly is the original captain, severely injured by Jimmy’s deliberate crash. He loses the ability to speak or move. His victimhood coexists with his earlier failure to protect Anya; the story does not establish complete innocence.
▸ Final fate: Jimmy places him in the only working cryopod and claims to have fixed things. The final perspective is Curly’s. Twenty years of nominal cryosleep offers an uncertain possibility, not confirmation of rescue.
💔 Anya: a silenced voice
Anya is pregnant following Jimmy’s sexual assault and remains trapped with him while continuing medical duties. Her attempts to seek protection and her isolation are central to the story’s emotional and moral questions.
▸ Final fate:she dies by overdose after locking herself in Medical, before Daisuke’s vent injuries. The game does not establish a secret killing by Jimmy.
🌱 Daisuke: exploited trust
Jimmy sends Daisuke through a damaged vent, where he is gravely injured. His trust is betrayed. Anya has already locked herself in Medical; the earlier claim that she protests this decision is unsupported and conflicts with the sequence.
▸ Final fate: after Daisuke’s injuries prove fatal, Swansea ends his suffering with the axe. The event gives their mentor–intern relationship tragic weight.
🔧 Swansea: resistance and a final witness
Swansea can be read as a flawed conscience under extreme conditions. His cynicism contrasts with his care for Daisuke, his painful decision to end the mortally injured intern’s suffering with the axe, and his later resistance to Jimmy. Neither an official moral ranking nor a claim that he notices everything first is established.
▸ Final fate: Jimmy drugs him before the vent incident, then shoots him in a later confrontation. These are separate events, with Daisuke’s death between them.
📌 Reading the overall structure
A structure in which rescue and repair fail can be read through the five characters and disrupted chronology: Jimmy causes harm, Curly is injured after failing to protect Anya, Anya dies, Daisuke is exploited and Swansea is killed. The personal tragedy also reflects Pony Express’s institutional disregard for its workers.
The cargo of mouthwash can symbolize workers’ disposability, while the title can suggest attempted personal and institutional cleansing. That reading does not make Jimmy’s actions inevitable or excuse them. No claim that it is the community’s most popular interpretation is supported here.
