Dark Half(Super Famicom)

💠 Soul Power drains with movement as control alternates

The biggest departures from conventional RPGs are Soul Power, which falls simply by moving, and orb-based development instead of experience points. Soul Power reaching zero immediately ends the game, linking exploration efficiency directly to survival. Faruko and Rukyu also have different battle systems and party-building methods. Understanding these foundations is essential for completing the game.

Dark Half — what should I check first in Perspective switching and soul basics?

Soul Power falls with every step through fields and dungeons; reaching zero causes game over. Winning battles restores a little, but not enough to justify careless backtracking or extra movement caused by pitfalls. It returns to a set value at section end, so plan its use across each section. Saving can also limit depletion, making regular saves and shorter routes useful.

📋 Progression checklist
Phase Objective Checklist
Early game Understand the 2-perspective hero/demon-lord structure
  • ・Prioritize equipment upgrades for the hero
  • ・Avoid unnecessary battles as the demon lord
  • ・Track the 2 perspectives using the same chapter numbers
Midgame Optimize soul consumption
  • ・Conserve ways to restore souls
  • ・Reduce unnecessary exploration and head directly to objectives
  • ・Always keep a save before a branch
Late game Secure the desired ending conditions
  • ・Check unfinished branching events
  • ・Enter the final stretch with spare soul reserves
  • ・Compare the hero's and demon lord's progression requirements
⚠️ Troubleshooting

1. The demon lord runs out of souls

Cause: Too many detours and battles

Solution: Limit each chapter to its required actions

2. Hero-side battles overwhelm you

Cause: Equipment upgrades are late

Solution: Upgrade equipment whenever you reach a new town

3. You cannot reach the intended ending

Cause: A branching event is incomplete

Solution: Check the conditions together and return to a pre-branch save

Consuming and restoring Soul Power

Soul Power falls with every step through fields and dungeons; reaching zero causes game over. Winning battles restores a little, but not enough to justify careless backtracking or extra movement caused by pitfalls. It returns to a set value at section end, so plan its use across each section. Saving can also limit depletion, making regular saves and shorter routes useful.

  • ▸ Soul Power falls every step and zero means game over
  • ▸ Battle victories restore some, but not a large amount
  • ▸ It resets to a set value at section end
  • ▸ Detours and wasted steps caused by traps are your greatest enemy
Development without experience: what orbs do

There are no levels or experience points. Instead, post-battle orbs increase attributes. Chaoz Orbs randomly raise attack, vitality, or speed, and stop appearing after everyone reaches the relevant caps. Magic Orbs raise magical power and continue appearing even when no further improvement is possible. Since precise targeting of one attribute is difficult, the basic approach is gradual improvement through repeated battles.

  • ▸ There are no levels or experience points; use orbs to develop characters
  • ▸ Chaoz Orbs randomly raise attack, vitality, or speed
  • ▸ Magic Orbs strengthen magical power
  • ▸ Some orbs stop appearing once attributes reach their caps
Different systems for hero and demon lord

Faruko and Rukyu use different combat systems and party arrangements. Faruko can only attack directly and cannot cast magic. His two fixed companions provide magical support, and hired mercenaries can increase party numbers. Rukyu's central mechanic is recruiting monsters with Dark Gate and gaining access to the spells they know. Always build your tactics around the character currently under your control.

  • ▸ Faruko specializes in direct attacks and cannot use magic
  • ▸ Two fixed companions support Faruko with magic
  • ▸ The hero's party can hire mercenaries
  • ▸ Rukyu uses magic through recruited monster followers
Saving and the 2 characters' souls (Super Famicom edition)

Faruko and Rukyu alternate turns in the story, and both consume Soul Power through movement. Save locations are also restricted, so compare travel distance with remaining reserves before exploring.

  • ▸ Running out of Soul Power causes game over. Replenish it by defeating enemies and leave a movement reserve
  • ▸ Each save point can be used only 1 time. Decide whether to use it immediately or reserve it for the next difficult section
  • ▸ Rukyu also spends Soul Power on magic. Check reserves when removing obstacles too
  • ▸ People whose souls Rukyu took appear changed during Faruko's later sections. Examining them may yield Lights of Hope
  • ▸ Faruko can recruit by talking to mercenaries. Rukyu recruits monsters with Dark Gate, but large monsters occupy multiple slots
