📋 Balatro Beginner Walkthrough: Antes 1–8
A walkthrough to help beginners work toward an Ante 8 win in Balatro. Focuses on common stumbling blocks, from spending money early and choosing a build direction to meeting the final Antes' scoring requirements.

Economy is the foundation
Jokers and card improvements drive Balatro runs, but you need money to buy them. Early on, work toward the default maximum of $5 interest per round by keeping at least $25 when you can safely beat the next Blind. The default interest cap is $5, reached at $25.
Be willing to pass on a purchase
If a shop Joker does not fit your build, passing can be useful. Buying without a purpose takes one of the standard five Joker slots and may force you to sell later. The displayed sell value is usually lower than the purchase price, so check the cost of buying a temporary replacement.
Weigh up Blind skips
You can skip a Small Blind or Big Blind to receive a Tag reward, such as money or a free Pack. Compare the reward with the income, interest, shop access, and growth triggers you give up. You must still beat the Boss Blind.
Purchases to consider
- Affordable Jokers ($2–$5): Joker (+4 Mult) or Photograph (X2 Mult when the first played face card scores), for example. Consider immediate value and whether its condition fits.
- Planet cards: Level up hands you actually play, such as Pair or Two Pair. Hand levels persist, so an early purchase can help across several rounds.
- Tarot cards, if you can afford them: Tarot cards can improve playing cards; The Chariot, for example, adds the Steel enhancement. Polychrome is a separate Edition, not a Steel-like enhancement granted by The Chariot.
Purchases to reconsider
- Expensive Jokers ($8 or more): Weigh interest against the scoring you need immediately; an expensive Joker can still be worthwhile if it solves that problem.
- Jokers whose conditions do not fit: Even-rank or face-card effects can be a mismatch if the cards you play cannot reliably activate them.
- Temporary Jokers such as Egg and Ice Cream: Egg builds sell value rather than immediate score; Ice Cream gives immediate Chips that decline over time. Judge the role and replacement timing instead of treating either as a permanent scoring solution.
💡 Tip
On White Stake, the normal Ante 1 Boss Blind requires 600 points before boss-specific modifiers. Read the displayed target and confirm your current hands can reach it before focusing on saving money.
When to commit
In the shops around Antes 2–3, look for Jokers that suggest a direction. Spare Trousers can support Two Pair, The Duo can support hands containing a Pair, and Sock and Buskin can support face-card scoring. Start bringing the build together without forcing a direction your actual offers cannot support.
Example build directions
♠ Flush
Collect one suit and improve its scoring. Suit conversion or selective removals can make Flushes more consistent.
👫 Pair / Two Pair
Relatively easy hands to assemble. The Duo and Spare Trousers can fit these plans when their conditions are met.
👑 Face cards
Use Jacks, Queens, and Kings. Triboulet, Photograph, and Sock and Buskin can form a powerful scoring combination when available.
🔢 Straight
Assemble consecutive ranks. Shortcut allows gaps of one rank, such as 10–8–6–5–3; arranging Straights still takes planning.
⚠️ Caution
Chasing several incompatible plans can leave too little scoring in the standard five Joker slots. Prioritize a coherent scoring plan while keeping effects that genuinely complement it.
Why the scoring wall appears
Score requirements rise steeply from Ante to Ante. Small fixed bonuses such as +4 or +8 Mult may become insufficient, so check ways to improve your total Chips and Mult, including multiplicative effects such as X2 or X4 Mult. X Mult is a valuable route, but a particular X Mult Joker is not mandatory if your other scoring sources can meet the target.
Ways to obtain X Mult
- Jokers: The Duo (X2 Mult), Photograph (X2 Mult), and Baron (X1.5 Mult for each King held in hand), for example. Choose conditions your hand and deck can meet.
- Playing-card improvements: The Spectral card Aura can add Polychrome (X1.5 Mult). Ectoplasm instead adds Negative to a random Joker, with a hand-size penalty.
- Scaling Jokers: Vampire, Hologram, and Constellation can build X Mult over time when you trigger their respective conditions.
Economy guideline
Around Ante 4,$30–$50 can leave room for purchases while retaining interest. This is a guideline, not a requirement. Look for scoring upgrades that fit your build, and compare their value before selling an existing Joker such as Joker or Misprint.
🎯 Score target guideline
On White Stake, normal Boss Blinds at Antes 4 and 5 require 10,000 and 22,000 points before boss-specific modifiers. Check the displayed requirement and estimate your total across the hands available rather than relying on one fixed per-hand target.
Plan for the Boss Blind
Late bosses can impose awkward effects. Check the next boss's effect in advance. If your build cannot handle it, consider a shop replacement while protecting the scoring you still need.
- The Needle(one hand): You must reach the target in one hand. Combine enough scoring to do so; X Mult can help.
- The Eye(no repeated hand types): Keep more than one playable scoring hand available.
- The Hook(random discards): Two cards remaining in hand are discarded after each hand played. Consider what you can still assemble with the cards left.
When to spend your savings
In the final Antes, compare the value of saving interest with buying what you need to win. If a Joker or Pack is necessary, consider spending the money to improve your scoring. Keep money required by your scoring effects, Rental payments, or later purchases; reroll only with a clear budget and useful targets.
Ante 8 score requirements
On White Stake, the normal Ante 8 Boss Blind requires 100,000 points before boss-specific modifiers; Violet Vessel requires 300,000. Higher Stakes change the requirements. Read the displayed target and your available hands. A compatible copying setup can be powerful, but Blueprint and Brainstorm are not required for every win.
Spending so much that you lose interest
Buying too many early Jokers can leave less than $5 and no default interest. Spend enough to survive, then rebuild your savings when practical.
Repeatedly changing your build direction
Switching whenever a supposedly stronger Joker appears can leave several unfinished plans. Around Ante 3, try to bring your actual cards and Jokers into a coherent direction.
Adding Chips while overlooking Mult
Score is Chips × Mult. Adding 200 Chips while Mult remains 1 adds only 200 points. Improve whichever side is limiting your score, and consider multiplicative effects that fit.
Keeping all Joker slots occupied without reassessing them
An early Joker may eventually contribute too little. Compare the replacement's immediate value, conditions, and cost before deciding what to sell.
Ignoring the Boss Blind's effect
You can check the boss before entering it. Starting without a plan can leave you unable to meet a restriction such as having only one hand.
Ignoring Planet cards
Planet hand levels persist. Consider buying the Planet for your main hand when its benefit fits your budget and remaining scoring needs.
