Twilight Syndrome: Tansaku-hen / Kyumei-hen Guides
A PlayStation horror adventure released by Human in 1996 and directed by Goichi Suda. From the perspectives of high-school girls, investigate rumors one by one, including local haunted sites and the school's seven mysteries. Side-scrolling exploration leads to choices at key moments; what you investigate and how you act change the story, characters' survival, and the conclusion. Largely self-contained episodes accumulate, with dusk-lit streets, almost photographic backgrounds, and sudden frightening scenes creating a distinctive atmosphere. The game has two parts, Tansaku-hen and Kyumei-hen; the latter explores the truth behind events in the former. This guide covers both Tansaku-hen, released in March 1996, and Kyumei-hen, released in July 1996: episode progression, choices, branching, avoiding bad endings, and handling frightening scenes, with spoilers kept limited.
English translation of the existing Japanese guide. Japanese-release names and mechanics are retained; this is not a new gameplay verification or a claim of complete coverage.
Early game: the opening of Tansaku-hen
Learn side-scrolling exploration and choices, and proceed safely through the first episode
- ・Check movement, examination, and selection controls, including how far you can walk in either direction.
- ・Read the first episode's choices calmly and pause before deciding.
- ・Save to a different slot after each completed episode so you can return and retry.
Midgame: the episodes of Tansaku-hen
Work through rumors and school mysteries, learning how branches and dangerous choices feel
- ・Keep each episode's location or rumor in mind and avoid obviously dangerous actions.
- ・Save more frequently through frightening stretches so an unexpected bad ending does not prevent returning.
- ・Try other choices even in completed episodes and record how the outcome changes.
Late game: finishing Tansaku-hen and moving to Kyumei-hen
Finish Tansaku-hen, then switch to pursuing its mysteries in Kyumei-hen
- ・Review Tansaku-hen's main conclusions and its connection to Kyumei-hen before moving on.
- ・Interpret Kyumei-hen's choices using the rumors and impressions of characters learned earlier.
- ・Note other endings and unexplored branches and plan to revisit them on later playthroughs.
Problem: Walking through the side-scrolling area no longer advances the story.
Cause: You have skipped an examination or conversation, or a required choice has not triggered progression.
Solution: Walk to both ends of the current screen and check every examinable location and person. When choices appear, consider every option and choose an action that fits the circumstances.
Problem: The story ends earlier than expected with a bad outcome.
Cause: A dangerous choice or rash action sent you down a bad-ending branch.
Solution: Return to the preceding save and try a different choice. Avoid apparently dangerous options such as unsettling invitations or going alone.
Problem: Frightening scenes make it hard to continue.
Cause: Repeated sudden supernatural images or audio scares leave you too tense to act.
Solution: Play in a bright environment or at lower volume, taking episodes in short sessions. First understand the approach to branching, then try again.
📋 Episode progression from Tansaku-hen to Kyumei-hen
The two-part structure uses Tansaku-hen to introduce and experience the episodes, and Kyumei-hen to explore their truth. Playing through Tansaku-hen first establishes the schoolgirls, town rumors, and school mysteries, making relationships and foreshadowing easier to understand in Kyumei-hen.

Walk left and right across the screen, examining places and people to advance the story. When progress stops, an unexamined object or unheard conversation often remains. Checking both ends of the area helps avoid getting stuck.
