Skul Beginner's Guide — Skull Choices, Awakening Costs, and Inscriptions
Scope: PC (Steam), base-game Normal mode. Public update notes were checked through version 1.9.1. Dark Mirror and Mythology Pack-specific strategies are outside this guide's scope. Sources checked: October 14, 2026. The information has not been independently reproduced through gameplay.
Look for new skulls behind green doors, and break unused skulls into bones to awaken your main skull. Choose items for the physical or magic attacks you actually use, not rarity alone. Rather than considering every pickup a replacement, start by developing a main skull that fits your equipment.

Guidelines when choosing
Skull door with green flames
Skull. What you don't use can be turned into bones.
You have not settled on a main skull, or lack enough bones for its next awakening.
golden door loaded with treasures
Rewards such as money
You want healing or items from the shop. Choose based on your gold and current HP.
normal door
rewards along the way
Don't think that you can get high rare equipment just by looking at it; instead, compare your options with the current shortage.
Black Market
Purchasing recovery/equipment etc.
When HP is low, check the cost and amount of healing you need before spending all your gold on upgrades.
How a new skull changes your actions: three examples
Skull (English name)
Operations used/Main properties
Unsuitable usage
Carleon Recruit → Carleon Sergeant
Press and hold a normal attack to focus and land an enhanced attack. The attacks of the summoned soldiers are physical. Create a safe distance and concentrate
Hold down while the enemy's attack is predicted. You don't have to stand there until you finish concentrating.
Skeleton Sword
Check the effects related to physical skills and Wound/Bleed in the skill description you have. Move away after a short attack and choose an opening to attack again.
I think that effects related to bleeding are unconditionally attached to any skill at any stage.
Mage → Grand Mage
Use spells such as Fireball and Fire Arrow while watching the remaining dedicated Mana. Restore it with normal attacks or meditation by holding Down + Attack, and make use of the recovery assistance when swapping.
If you have a configuration where you want to increase magic attack, select equipment that increases only physical attacks by rarity. Hit skills repeatedly while running out of mana
Available skills and awakened properties differ by skull. Even within the same upgrade line, do not assume that a Common skull has its higher-rarity version's effects.
Awakening costs: bones to reserve for one main skull
Current → next stage
bones needed
calculation and judgment
Common → Rare
10
First goal to develop main power from Common
Rare → Unique
30
Starting from Common, reaching this point costs 40 in total. Before spending 10 on your second skull, consider whether to advance your main skull to Unique instead.
Unique → Legendary
100
Total 140 for all stages from Common. Count the amount you need from the current stage
Bones gained by breaking skulls
Common 5/Rare 11/Unique 23/Legendary 44
Consider breaking unwanted skulls on the pickup screen. Read the selected option so you do not discard your main skull by swapping accidentally.
Awaken skulls at Arachne. These are the normal-mode base values for awakening and breaking skulls; additional Dark Mirror bone uses and special skull handling are excluded.
Action order after finding a skull and through the next few rooms
Read your main skull's normal attacks, skills and swap effect. Check whether it uses physical or magic damage and requires concentration or a dedicated gauge.
On the skull pickup screen, compare how it works with your current items. If you are not switching, break it into bones and count what remains toward the next awakening cost of 10 / 30 / 100.
When you enter the room, look for a caster who creates a red area at your feet, or an archer who creates a line of fire from a distance. Don't just keep hitting the melee enemies in front of you, move out of range and prioritize distant enemies.
After using your main skull's skills, swap to the other skull if available and use its swap effect and remaining skills. If swapping is on cooldown, avoid attack warnings instead of forcing extra hits.
When you arrive at Arachne, check the bones and the effect that will change with the next awakening and use it for your main power. In the Black Market, check your health and separate your budget for recovery and equipment.
Before Chapter 1's Yggdrasil fight, check your main skull's awakening stage, healing and item damage type. Use a familiar skull and skills during the brief openings when you can approach the boss.
Equipment Choices: Match Damage Type and Inscriptions
Configuration to use
Item to read
Example of swapping
Focused on Carleon Recruit's soldiers and physical skills
Physical Attack、Arms、Courage
Compare whether changing items raises physical damage and preserves the active Inscription threshold.
Mainly magic such as Mage's Fireball
Magic Attack、Artifact、Wisdom
The game revolves around the power of magic and the operation of turning Mana. Do not replace with items that only increase physical
The two skulls use different damage types
Which one do you use as your main power?
If upgrading both equally leaves neither effective, focus your items on the main skull.
When exchanging for a rare item
Total Inscription counts, including those on the item you would remove
Do not decide from rarity alone; also consider the drawback of losing an active Inscription effect.
Inscription multipliers have been adjusted in past updates. This table links damage types with names; it is not a table of current multipliers for every Inscription.
Some skulls can be awakened to Rare, Unique and Legendary at Arachne. Keep a main skull that fits your items and break unwanted skulls into bones to fund the next awakening.
Does equipment increase physical or magical abilities?
Follow the descriptions of the skills you mainly use. For example, Carleon Recruit's soldiers deal physical damage, while Mage's Fireball deals magic damage. Do not decide from skull type or item rarity alone.
