Okage: Shadow King — what should I check first in Basic systems?

Enemy ghosts appear as symbols in fields and dungeons, and touching them starts combat. Choosing whether to avoid or contact visible enemies lets you control the balance between leveling and moving forward.

📋 Progression checklist
Phase Objective Checklist
Early game Complete the opening in which Stan inhabits Ari's shadow, then learn controls and combat in the first town and field
  • ・Follow the introductory events to understand the Evil King's presence and purpose
  • ・Talk to every resident in the first town for destination hints and initial requests
  • ・Fight weak ghosts in nearby fields to learn ATB action order and command selection
Midgame Visit towns and dungeons, advance companions' and impostor Evil Kings' episodes, and build combat strength
  • ・Check equipment and item shops in each new town, upgrading weapons and armor within your budget
  • ・Explore dungeon dead ends to avoid missing branches or treasure chests
  • ・Complete impostor Evil King events in order and secure healing items for bosses
Late game Approach the story's core and conclude it by maximizing everyone's equipment and healing preparations for successive strong ghosts
  • ・Upgrade to top-tier equipment available in late-game towns and fields
  • ・Save before stretches of consecutive bosses and replenish healing items close to the inventory limit
  • ・Choose formation and command priorities with weaknesses and status resistances in mind
⚠️ Troubleshooting

1. You wander the fields without knowing where to go next

Cause: You missed hints about the next destination in conversations with townspeople or Stan

Solution: Return to the previous town and speak to residents you missed or characters whose responses changed to check event triggers and destinations

2. Ordinary ghosts are unexpectedly difficult, and healing cannot keep up

Cause: Avoiding too many visible encounters has left your levels and equipment insufficient

Solution: Deliberately contact enemy symbols in an earlier field to level up, then upgrade to available town equipment before proceeding

3. You cannot finish a boss ghost and lose a prolonged battle

Cause: Ignoring ATB action order has upset the balance of healing and attacks

Solution: Issue healing commands early so the healer does not act too late, concentrating on attacks only while HP reserves allow

Visible encounters and field movement

Enemy ghosts appear as symbols in fields and dungeons, and touching them starts combat. Choosing whether to avoid or contact visible enemies lets you control the balance between leveling and moving forward.

  • ▸ Watch enemy symbols and circle around them when you do not want combat
  • ▸ Approach weak enemy symbols when seeking levels or money
  • ▸ Prepare equipment before entering narrow dungeon corridors where evasion is difficult
Active-time battle fundamentals

Combat uses an active-time system in which characters' opportunities to act arrive as time passes. Commands such as attacking and healing are simple; how you allocate actions influences victory.

  • ▸ When an action becomes available, promptly choose attack or healing for the situation
  • ▸ Issue healing instructions early, before HP falls, so the healer does not act too late
  • ▸ Against strong foes, prioritize HP management over reckless attacks and fight patiently
Shadows and ghosts as motifs

Stan inhabiting Ari's shadow is central to the story and setting. Enemies are called ghosts, and a decaying yet humorous atmosphere surrounding shadows and ghosts runs throughout.

  • ▸ Restoring the prestige of the great Evil King in the shadow is a major story motivation
  • ▸ Ghost enemies and impostor Evil Kings shape local episodes
  • ▸ Darkly humorous dialogue and puppet-theater-like presentation create the distinctive atmosphere
