📖 Black/Matrix fundamentals: map combat and units
Map combat, unit actions, terrain, formation, and other basic systems.
Black/Matrix — what should I check first in Basic systems?
Combat is tactical, moving units individually across a map. Move, attack, and clear maps by defeating enemies or reaching destinations. Begin by understanding movement range, attack range, and action order, then establish what is possible each turn.
| Phase | Objective | Checklist |
|---|---|---|
| Early game | Understand the systems and your development plan |
|
| Midgame | Stabilize map progression |
|
| Late game | Overcome difficult maps and judge story developments |
|
1. Your force takes heavy losses on maps
Cause: Overaggressive movement and a disordered formation
Solution: Wait outside enemy attack range and use terrain and reach to defeat opponents individually
2. Only particular units seem weak
Cause: Uneven experience and unclear roles
Solution: Let weaker units land finishing blows to distribute experience, and give them roles suited to their abilities
3. You are unsure how to proceed or what to choose in the story
Cause: Insufficient understanding of branches and upcoming developments
Solution: Save separately before important choices and proceed while checking the results
Combat is tactical, moving units individually across a map. Move, attack, and clear maps by defeating enemies or reaching destinations. Begin by understanding movement range, attack range, and action order, then establish what is possible each turn.
- ▸ Shape the battle by moving units in sequence
- ▸ Position with movement and attack ranges in mind
- ▸ Anticipate enemy counterattacks and the next turn with each action
On a first playthrough, prioritize reducing accidents over efficiency. Basic precautions, such as not sending a single main unit into enemy range and keeping healers behind the line, improve reliability. Where terrain offers advantages or disadvantages, choose defensible positions to limit losses.
- ▸ Use fixed attack, healing, and support roles
- ▸ Check enemy attack ranges before advancing
- ▸ Use terrain to intercept from defensible positions
Until comfortable with map combat, overadvancing into encirclement or failing to heal in time can halt progress. Knowing responses beforehand makes a first attempt steadier.
- ▸ If losses are heavy, wait, draw enemies in, and defeat them individually
- ▸ If healing cannot keep up, stop forcing an advance and regroup
- ▸ If development becomes uneven, direct experience toward weaker units
